Pequod's Review: Hot or Not?

Updated: Mar 21

Chicago is synonymous with deep dish pizza. It’s what everybody thinks of when you talk about what Chicago is famous for. As a south side thin crust aficionado, I will give credit where credit is due on a good deep dish. My son Justin texted me today and asked since we were both off of work, if I was up to taking the trek up north to try the famous Pequods deep dish. It has come in first in many polls, known for its caramelized cheese and crust. We decided to visit its original location in Morton Grove. It surprised me that it’s located on a residential street and how little and dilapidated it was. I said this is what I love, a little hole in the wall place serving some of the best pizza in Chicago. The ambience was perfect, the pizza was not. All I can say is that it was a disappointment.

The pizza looks way better than what it tastes. The pizza has a doughy crust with a ton of cheese so the sauce needs to add something to the flavor, unfortunately it was the most bland sauce I have ever tasted on a pizza. Together it was just a chewy tasteless pizza with no spice or flavor that made you want more. The caramelized crust didn’t even have a snap or added anything to the overall taste or texture. The best thing about it was the sausage, it had a great flavor and was very good, but didn’t have enough on it. Out of all the deep dish pizzas in Chicago I felt this was the one didn’t live up to its reputation, and can think of a few more pizzas that represent Chicago better. We ordered a thin crust to try and I’ll review that in a different post.
